Final module evaluation

overall as a module i believe that i have made progress since last years cop module. however i personally believe that it is not one of my strongest. the fact that it is a highly written module is an immediate downfall as forming formal sentences is highly complicated for me and i feel like what i say doesnt make all that much sense at times. for example after i reread my initial essay draught it made absolutely no sense and i had to rewrite so much of it to understand it myself. however since last year i chose a subject that i know more about as well as having a massive interest in expanding my knowledge on the subject. as someone whos preffered future career may revolve around similar aspects of the theme i chose, i feel like it would benefit me greatly to keep learning about what the genre involves, and the audience it aims to please.

for next year i intend to try keep the theme similar in terms of the general theme. however i will have to find a more refined area of it to focus on, because that is one of my biggest flaws when it comes to research and essay work. i dont know what i should and shouldnt include and i believe that it is absolutely essential that i manage my research skills and figure out what is been asked into greater detail in the future. as i have found, i tend to look at the bits of a project that interest me more that splitting my research evenly. so in knowing this i can now learn to evenly work towards different parts of what i need to fully understand a subject. as well as this i intend to focus somewhat more on the illustrative side to my decided theme. as in this module i found it rather hard to find examples of work that i could closely relate to the themes i was researching.

as for the practical side of the module i believe that i have made something that i can put into a collection of work i am happy with. however at the same time it could be much more refined and the images could be better. the contents of a few of the pages i am very happy with as i am not usually wery good at making a point come accross in imagery. the quality of the final publication itself could be way better, if i had organised my time more effectively then i belueve that i would be able to make the book longer and to a higher standard. doing this would impact the eerieness and the impact of the images and i believe would be a much better piece. i would also touch on my visual journal. i found myself creating images and sketches that were more for my own preference and i wish i could have developed my final images more. however it was rather late in the project before i knew how i wanted to draw out the images for each page. on the other hand my designs have vastly changed from my origioanl ideas and mock up books. i feel like my intentions at the begining of the practical work were much more thought out as well as challenging. so i am rather dissapointed in myself that i couldnt make some of the book format ideas. so by achknowledging this i plan to force myself to make some products that i wouldnt naturally consider. if i challenge myself more at this stage in my studies i believe it would be highky beneficial to my knowledge and understanding of potential outcomes to future briefs and possible self assigned projects.

looking back at the final book i would say that the transition from the image on paper to a digital print of the image could have been cleaner. i now see that if i made the final images slightly more compact than the final drawn image size then the images would look cleaner with stronger line work. i will remember this for next time and attempt to make my images with traditional media more easily made into a professionally printed piece.

something that i feel has gone very well is the tone of voice and the type of work i am creating. this module had forwarded my understanding of the type of work i would like to take forward. as i mentioned that i struggle communicating opinion through images, i believe that i have found a way that i can incorporate it into the kind of images that i make. in doing this i feel it to be a large personal step as it seems like a crucial ability to have.

final essay

(please use the printed one if you can for the bibliography, i keep altering the file and changing things on the word document but when putting it onto issuu it just wont keep the images in the same place.)

final book and short evaluation

i have had mixed reactions to the book itself as a final outcome. you can tell the interests of the people that understand what i have tried to say, because they see the world in a similar way. the world been this place where things seem strait forward in the way we have to live to continue living, and how it actually can feel like a burden and creates a substantial lack of meaning. as well as a feeling of been used as a member of society for other peoples gains.

people have responded to this publication better than i imagined they would. i wanted to make something that i would myself buy and enjoy the concept of. and in doing so i thing that i have managed to make something i am proud of.

i am glad i didn't add more text in the end because the majority of people have been able to interpret what i was trying to show, and the others seemed to miss out some little details in the images that would make it clearer for them. but overall i would say that i am happy with the result.

however, if i was to do it again i believe that i would try do some more things to improve the book.
  • i would possibly change the font of the text on the cover. as i went for the typewriter look to suit the aesthetics of the artwork included, but i feel like it could be better. at the same time i really struggle to distinguish what looks good when it comes to fonts, and i generally don't notice the differences when looking at other peoples work.
  • i think that i would change the page size, either make it longer or thinner to maybe give a larger contrast with the images i put in, making the world inside seem never ending.adding a more hopeless feeling
  • the paper i used. i think it good quality paper but i don't feel like the texture complimented it too great. in hindsight i wish i tested what it looked like on different paper and possibly different printers. as i used the print dungeon printer, some of my peers said that those printers can come out a little grainy. despite scanning my images at a high resolution.
  • i would have like to make some more concepts for the monsters too, as some of them don't look amazing and the smaller one is a bit of a let down looking back at it.
  • i also believe that the page with the people holding the daggers could have been drawn better but i wanted the people to look anonymous and thats how i imagined it.

things to take away from this:

  • better use of font and text
  • look more into how to structure a book
  • see how i can make something stand out more at first glance
  • composition of imagery in the book
  • quality of art can always be improved
  • how to structure a book, like the use of spreads and space

indesign final

for my final publication i have kept it very simple in terms of text. there have been no specifications to base the quantity of text on, as well as it been a very weak field for me. i never seem to get the font, size and placement right so i believe that it is in my best interest to stay away as much as i can because i cant seem to get the grasp of it. another reason for me to accept that i shouldn't use that much written aspects is that we have been told in last years PPP that if there is something that you are not good at then its a good idea to keep away for the most part. its better to keep what your bad at to a minimum so it doesn't bring the good down. and i believe this is correct in this instance also.

if i have some nice imagery and then some less great writing i think it could ruin the whole book and defeat the purpose of making a book that works with imagination.

background

i made a texture to layer behind the image and fiddle with the adjustments of it. i like the way this looks on the screen and i plan on doing a quick pre print of it in the dungeon before i print my book again. just to be sure.

the texture itself i tried to make it look as surreal as i could do with the knowledge i have. and i quite like what it looks like. you cant make out what it is and i think thats perfect for what I'm trying to add it to. it means that you can interpret it however you like which suits the there somewhat.

faulty final book

i printed the final book and the pages didn't come out as clean as the appeared on photoshop and indesign.i will have to get it reprinted in a drop in session however the images need to look way better. in saying this i really don't like the front cover now i have seen it printed. i didn't want to add colour because digitally adding colour looks tacky when i do it as well as when i try add colour pencil over the top of the images i have made. but in seeing the final result i feel like the book needs some form of colour and i believe the best place is the cover page.

final draughts and mock

my mock up book loods decent in size and the images fit nicely to me.
however i have asked some of my peers for feedback and they have said a few things to concider before i make my final book

  • my image ideas have a strong presence and understanding for what I'm doing
  • good concept
  • interenting themes
  • possibly keep text to a minimum if you struggle with it.
  • look at different fonts
  • the title is a good contrast with the idea for the front cover.
  • the images are relatively self explanatory, especially after you know the title
  • the text should be looked at more
  • maybe make the pages thinner?

making final images

some roughs of what i intend to make as my final pages, i think that the book should be more landscape than anything else.
as i want my images to be seen from more of a distance than an up close kind of feeling, i believe that landscape would capture the images more strongly.

i have had some problems with a couple pages as when i was planning the setup of the book i accidentally made a counting error and didnt realise until i made a mock book that my images werent in a multiple of 4 to make double sided pages.

which means i had less time to plan out what i wanted to do for the extra page.

however i dealt with the problem and managed to make the extra double page spread.

final pages seperately

i like all the images, as they are, however i think that it would be usefull to see how they print out and look on the paper i will be using because i wish to keep the images black and white. so i will have to clean them up on photoshop aw well as make sure they actually look decent enough to print as final outcomes
